Gif It Up

September 1 - October 31, 2016
National Library of Australia

The National Library of Australia wants you! Do you have creative, technology savvy students? The National Library of Australia’s discovery service Trove, in conjunction with the Digital Public Library of America, is participating in GIF IT UP, a free online competition to encourage interaction with our cultural heritage collections.

What is a GIF?

A GIF is an image file which can be both animated and static. GIF IT UP is a challenge to take copyright-free heritage images from our cultural heritage collections and animate them in creative ways. Highlights from past competitions include historic lighthouses, a department store Christmas card, a nineteenth century Ipswich subdivision plan and the Eiffel Tower. It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes to create a GIF.

Where does GIF IT UP fit in the curriculum?

7-10 History: Historical skills - explanation and communication.

When is GIF IT UP happening?

Gif-making resources and curated images available: 1 – 30 September

Competition runs: 1 – 31 October 2016

In September we’ll be sharing information about how to get involved. We’ll be providing online resources for Gif creation and curated lists of images to use and information on how to enter the competition.

If you would like to participate, or if you have any questions, please send the NLA a message using the Trove contact form.

The ACT HTA encourages new and existing members to deepen their involvement in the most dynamic curriculum area in the ACT. As a member-focused association the HTA aims to:

  • promote and encourage an interest in the study and teaching of History
  • provide a forum for discussion and exchange of information
  • publish material related to History and curriculum developments
  • support all activities that may assist History teachers in their aim to provide excellence in education

Please consider joining our association for some great professional contacts and free access to PD sessions throughout the year. The new membership form for 2016 is now available.

Some changes have been instituted, including the option of receiving editions of the NSWHTA professional journal. Institutional membership will now apply only for groups other than schools, although a special Primary School rate has been included to encourage teachers from that sector to join the Association. Teachers at Secondary and College level will need to join as individuals. These yearly rates were set at our AGM.
